Screening of 'Tender'

We had a very successful event last Tuesday with the screening of our new film 'Tender' which was made with Latimer Creative Media .  The event was held in Screen on the Green, Islington.  There was a great performance about domestic abuse from Southgate School to kick off the activities.  Awards were presented by Tender staff and the Mayor of Islington to Southgate School, Samuel Rhodes School, Golborne Youth Centre and Beal High teacher Suzi Loades.

The 'making of' film (by Jonathan Brady and Latimer Creative Media) was screened followed by 'Tender'.  Some of the young people involved in making the film then took to the stage for a Q&A session.

Photos taken by the wonderful and talented Sophie Elliot will be posted up soon!

Teenage Kicks

.

In Teenage Kicks, Aasmah Mir explores the sexual pressures faced by teens in Britain today. At a time when young people are more exposed than ever to extreme sexual and violent behaviour, we hear about the work being done on the front-line, with kids who are growing up too fast. We hear from teenage boys on why sharing girls together is not just 'gang rape', but a way of life. And we'll find out how gang culture is pervading teens' ideas of how relationships work. Aasmah looks into the factors that mean sexual violence is on the increase in the early teens. And meets youth workers at the sharp end. How do you teach a 14 year old, who's used his mobile phone to film a girl performing a sexual act, about the complex nature of 'consent'? What if his frames of reference come from pornography on mobile phones at school? Teenage Kicks asks those working with youth, and teenagers themselves - what can be done to help young people have healthy relationships?

An Independent Evaluation of the TRUST Education Project:

For the summary of the report click here

For the full report click here

The TRUST project aims to:

EDUCATE young people about the violence and abuse perpetrated in relationships.

EXPOSE attitudes that condone and conceal domestic and sexual violence and challenge those attitudes with facts and an understanding of the consequences.

ENABLE young people to seek support and use the services available if they, or someone they know, is suffering from abuse.

Teachers who have participated in the TRUST project have had to say about it:

“The male students are more reflective about the use of violence.  They think more about it and the female students are far more self-assured” (Teacher, July 2008)

“Girls are more aware of the issues.  Some girls were already in an abusive relationship and were able to extricate themselves from them by the end of the project.” (Head of Drama, January 2008)

“The effect on the students involved was life changing.” (Teacher, January 2009)

Key findings of the evaluation were that:

90% of students felt that they had learnt something from the project

89% of the students reported that they had enjoyed taking part in the project

79% of teachers noted changes in most pupils

91% of teachers felt the changes noted in their students were positive

Heartbeat Project

We are pleased to announce our involvement in a new international project, Heartbeat, to prevent violence in young people's relationships. The Heartbeat project will run for two years, reaching young people and teachers in the UK, Germany , Austria, Hungary and Spain. The project is supported by Daphne III under the coordination of our
