If you think a friend is experiencing abuse, there are things you can do to help. It is always important that you keep yourself safe, above all.
- Be there. Sometimes simply listening and supporting your friend is the best thing you can do. The abusive person will try to isolate your friend. If you are there for her she will feel less isolated and more supported.
- Acknowledge the abuse. Make your concerns known and believe what she tells you.
- Help her understand that she is not to blame and that abuse is never okay.
- Identify help resources for your friend.
Remember, abuse is a heavy issue that may make you feel overwhelmed or scared. If you experience these emotions, it is also important for you to seek help.
If you are being abused, speak to someone who you can trust, whether it is a close friend, family member or an outside agency.
Agencies are there to help you. They will be able to give you helpful advice and also listen to you. Agencies have seen and heard about many cases of abuse. It's important to remember that they are there to help you and that people have been able to leave their abusive partner with this help.
